Word is the BIG extended offer to UNC to join conference

  • today. Hearing any rumblings in Chapel Hill? I understand they've been in talks for a while now with the official offer coming today. Sounds like if UNC comes, Virginia will be joining as well.

  • I'm jk. You never know. We all hope to stay in the ACC but we aren't the ones who will make that call. Haven't seen any chatter but ill keep on the lookout. If we do make that move at least we'd be with schools who were academically on par with us as opposed to the SEC where we are way higher academically than all but Vandy and Purdue.

Actually, Purdue is in the B1G. Everyone in Columbus is buzzing about this. Many B1G fans believe UNC would be the strongest addition due to the quality academics, football, basketball, and alumni support. I can see how many UNC fans would be interested in the SEC due to their recent football dominance but the B1G has a lot to offer.

Well, if the BIG is to get to 18 or 20 teams, the bulk of them would probably come from the ACC, thus keeping some geographical and historical rivalries alive for y'all. You could always schedule NC State as an OOC football game to keep that rivalry going, no different than Ga/GaTech, FSU/Florida....I don't see the BIG taking two schools from NC though.

  • Ok nm just Vandy then! Georgia's pretty good too. But you are right, UNC is the bomb all around especially since our football program is now heading in the right direction. Just a warning though, if you take us, you gotta take the dookies too. No one cares about Ncsux or Wake but we are joined at the hip with dook unfortunately.

    Doc Flow

  • If we go B1G then State better not end up in the SEC.

We better not tee our biggest rival up for success.

    That's all I'm saying...

  • That is talked about in this link, but the BIG probably doesn't want to add Duke to get to 16 teams, maybe in the next wave that gets them to 20. It's all about new TV markets, which gives the BigTenNetork the revenue to pay all these schools the big bucks.

North Carolina has received an official offer to join Big Ten Conference, who’s next? - Gamedayr : Gamedayr

Its official: The Big Ten is looking to dip into ACC territory once again, having offered a place in their league to the North Carolina Tar Heels.

  • We have offers from both, but we WILL NOT be the team to cripple the ACC. People high in administration as well as athletics want the SEC and MAJOR donors have threatened to withhold their donations if we go to the B1G. We are trending to the SEC from everything I've been told but there is work left to be done.

I'm having dinner with a former BOT member and will try to see what he knows

Well we have someone who is well respected insider who knows someone in the AD department of UNC and said "IF said Offer exists, its a done deal to the B10." You will lose money going to the SEC. Its not just about athletics although you will earn more money from TV dollars in the B10 then you will in the SEC anyway its also about cultural fit and academics. B10 blows the SEC out of the water in that regard. And you know damn well the donors are not going to withhold a dime. That is like cutting off your nose to spite your face. Its nothing more then posturing and so be it. You call their bluff and watch them fold.

  • I personally don't want to be a Big Ten member. The ACC is perfect geographically for UNC, and our sports have thrived in this conference. Our football team is only getting better and I'd be very disappointed if we made the move. I don't want Virginia to leave or GT or anybody else. If it weren't for Swofford screwing the ESPN deal so badly, ACC schools wouldn't even consider leaving..just my opinion.

  • As long as there is an ACC, I think UNC is in it. We will go down with this ship. Once it sinks we will then explore our options, which will be whatever conference we want. No conference would turn us down. I personally want the ACC to move on some schools and get stronger so it can stay around but if we had to change I think the B1G is a better fit for us. The SEC would make more since geographically but the B1G is a better fit academically which is very important to the UNC faithful.

  • Being a Big Ten member is worth WAY more than any other conference. Football money is chump change compared to CIC access (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Committee_on_Institutional_Cooperation#section_3) Big Ten member schools get. But the Big Ten will only accept members to their conference that qualify academically...this is why FSU will not get offered as much as Big Ten football fans may want them. Get ready for the ACC to die as you have known it, the following schools will probably end up in the Big Ten: UNC, UVA, Duke, GT, BC and either ND or Johns Hopkins.

    We'll see.

UNC is a 200 yr old research university with $767M in research funding in 2012 alone. UNC is engaged in numerous cooperative projects with institutions all over the world. If an academic consortium is so valuable, then why isn't UNC already a member of one? Why hasn't the failure to be a member of such a consortium limited UNC as research institution?

Where is the support for this position that CIC membership has exponential value that will grow research funding? I haven't seen anything to suggest that athletic conference affiliation nor membership in the CIC helps win research grants.

    nono

The only people that think the B1G is impressive are people that have grown up in the midwest.

I am getting tired of B1G posters trying to sale me on the B1G.

I'm not from the Midwest. And I'm not trying to sell you on anything. I have nothing to do with any of this...but it's probably coming whether you or I like it or not. If you are right UNC should shoot this offer down pretty quick no? We'll see.

    Probably.

Kind of like the entire SEC. In which the NCAA just turns a blind eye.
