Who do you want as UNC's next head coach?

  • Have you seen enough of Withers to want to keep him around or do you want to go outside the staff and bring in someone completely new and different?

    Thoughts?

  • If we win Saturday, I think Withers should stay. My biggest concern if he is replaced is a revolt by current players. Not to mention the fact the recruiting class would probably disappear.

    JP4UNC

  • It depends.

We need to get the buzz around the program back. If Withers can do that by continuing to win, then I like Withers. However, winning without buzz is not good enough for me. If we can get Urban Meyer or Chris Peterson, I don't see how you say no. If you are looking to replace Withers with Skip Holts, no thanks. Guz Malzhan or Chad Morris - maybe.

Regardless, I am much more comfortable with the future of football now that we will soon have an AD with a proven track record for good football hires in place.

  • Yeah withers is good...but I would love to see them hire urban Meyer that would put us back on the road Davis had us on, damn I miss Davis...( but withers if no big names, he's done a great job

  • i really like Withers..?? ALOT.....but if we could get Urban Meyer id be estatic...he could hit the ground running and recruiting would not back up a bit.

  • I would love to see a completely new staff brought in. We seem to recruit pretty well, but we can't keep the top talent in the state home. How do you expect to get top 4 and 5 star guys from other states if you can't keep the top guys from your own state home? Then when you get good guys, in my opinion you won't turn them loose to play aggressively. Every year I hear people on these type sites saying so and so is a long shot becauuse Alabama or some other SEC school is after them. Heck Clemson is getting more of the elite players out of this state then we do, We get a large number of good recruits, but I believe they get more of the 4 and 5 star type guys. I would love to see the numbers on the elite players in the past couple of years.

  • All the speculation about Meyer coming to UNC is honestly silly. Any salary that could be offered would easily be matched by higher profile traditional football programs. As much as I love the Tar Heels it is ridiculous to think that UNC would even be on Urban Meyer's radar. Its just plain wishful thinking and we should honestly move on and get back to reality but I realize as long as he is out there people will hope.

Cunningham has a 'history' with both Malzahn and Peterson. Not so much with Meyer. I just don't think Meyer is a realistic possibility for many reasons.

    1. Money. They will have to pay him more than Butch to get him here. And to do that while they are still playing Butch? Just doubt that's going to happen.

    2. Desire. Meyer has to want to coach. He almost has to need to coach to avoid another situation like he experienced at UF. And not just a couple days a week but be on the road recruiting and putting in the 80 hour weeks and away from his family. Has he had enough time off and want/need to coach that much? His job right now is pretty cushy and I can see it being tough for him to walk away from.

    3. Other jobs. As much as UNC is 'big time,' potential openings at Ohio State and Penn State could shift the power balance to the Big 10 in college openings. Would Meyer wait for one of these or does he want to stay away from the pressure those would bring and find a place like UNC?

    This speculation...or don't you read b4 posting

  • The speculation on Meyer is based on his interest. When Bubba contacted him, he said he was willing to listen. He has also spoken very favorably of UNC on Satallite radio, but wouldn't comment on the job because we had a coach. Meyer and Bubba have "history" when they worked together at ND for 6 years. There is no doubt that Meyer's market price is top 3 in football, but I don't know that money will drive his career decision on the next HC position he accepts. Butch's market price was higher than what he was making at UNC. I was in grad school in Florida during Meyer's tenure and know some people relatively close to the program. They would all be very surprised if Meyer took the OSU job (doesn't mean it won't happen) because it comes with the same baggage that made the UF job so difficult for him. It was not the stresses of coaching at the highest level but the additional issues and compromises that come with competing in the SEC. If he comes back to coaching, UNC is an attractive landing spot - plenty of resources and talent in a national, well branded school. As Andrew Jones said, UNC is a "sleeping giant" in football. All that said, it is not probable, but it is still possible and the fact that he is willing to consider it, no matter how preliminary, should not be dismissed.

Please don't confuse this post with the delusions of grandeur that are so common in Rawlee, but UNC is an attractive job with great potential, especially with Bubba heading the athletics department.

I am glad that we have a new AD like Bubba that is reaching out to the best in back channels.

Bubba's coaching hire is something to be excited about and to look forward to.

UNC AD Cunningham could eye Chris Petersen

New North Carolina Athletic Director Cunningham could bring in Chris Petersen as football coach.

We need to start over. Get rid of Wiithers and bring in a fresh face.

    heelsdrama

  • After today I would say WIthers fate was sealed. I personally would like Gus or the Houston coach. They are going to be hungry and hopefully dedicated recruiters.
