UNC football players flocked to suspect class - Local/State - NewsObserver.com

Julius Nyangoro promised to teach a class that would meet daily. Instead, it was set up for independent study, requiring only a paper. Eighteen football players signed up.

  • Not saying let it go as far as learning from it, but three years after the fact to keep beating a dead horse or at least one that has run away to the NFL or whatever makes no significant sense. I am sure the coaches here today and the teaching staff saw the problems caused. I have seen teams like Alabama and other top schools put under probation through the years and three years later there own people were not still trying to beat them down for what happened. If anything they were encouraging the new people and youngsters to be a step above, Well it took awhile for Bama to get back there but the encouragement and backing worked id say. But anyway Hope these kids and staff can just concentrate on now and the future. GO TARHEELS!

  • This isn't a football issue. This is an administration issue. I thought this series of tweets break it down nicely.

Disclaimer re next series of tweets: I am a UNC grad and disgusted at AFAM situation. I welcome investigation. But I do have some questions:

Flurry of questionable activity from 2007-2009, then it pretty much all stops but for two classes...

In Fall 2010, JN teaches suspect class consisting of 9 students, NONE are athletes, then summer 2011 class comes...

JN waves off usual prof, then lies to the dean. Needs 18 kids to make class for $12K, then magically EXACTLY 18 football players enroll

Is that academic fraud, or is Nyang'oro just stealing money? Decides at last minute he wants $12K and has a hookup in advising to get kids

Also, for breathless hype of class w/18 of 19 FB players, there was also FA2010 class w/9 of 9 non-ath. and SU2009 w/ 31/34 non-ath.

Clearly something is rotten but I don't think fraud was set up for purpose of benefiting athletes; that was a side effect.

  • Jon,

Is there a big disconnect between the professors at UNC and the sports programs?
Are the faculty at odds with the coaches or are they supporters of athletics at UNC?

  • What the heck is going on there? I don't have love for UNC (although I went to BBall camp there and loved every minute of it when I was growing up), but I had always respected you all and UVA as Universities. I am really shocked and disappointed to see what was going on academically. Crap happens in recruiting and who says what says, but this was surprising, maybe I was just naive?

If anything this is the type of thing the media, your graduates, students, professors, and admins, and political figures.

  • Agree...players did nothing wrong here. Why not attend an easy class if its being offered to you.

In every school across the country there are 'sports friendly' professors who are more lenient on athletes so players are steered into their classes.

However, there are also those who despise the athletic department and would likely do away with the entire department if they could.

Again, it's like this across the country. I don't think there is a problem as a whole because there are bad apples in every bunch.
