Was talking when someone else who runs an N.C. State site on another network and he basically said the same thing.

"N.C. State should just wait until all the other schools get their commitments and then go after who is left."

Yikes, that's quite an indictment considering the source.

Was said tongue in cheek and the guy immediately joked about what he said ending up on a message board and ruining his career.

But consider they have exactly 0 commitments and don't really lead for anyone in-state. The kids they do offer don't care and look immediately elsewhere. They might lead for a kid momentarily before he gets a 'better' offer.

Things are pretty tough for Wolfpack recruiting at the moment.

Was told by the same guy that the N.C. State coaches think the in-state talent level as a whole is 'down' this year so they really aren't worried about missing on guys they don't think that highly of anyway.

That said, they honestly might not land more than 5-6 in the entire Top 43 in N.C. as currently ranked by 247Sports.

I also told him it wouldn't be a terrible idea. They could save their resources and spend their money on scouting out the underrated talent in Georgia and Florida and probably be just as well off.

  • It's pretty bizarre how State has become a non factor in recruiting even in its own state the last few years. It's basically become UNC or out of state for the better prospects from NC. I think TOB and his staff's negative recruiting has caught up to them and McCollum going to GT is a factor as well.

Had some State fans saying the other day that their lack of commitments wasn't a worry because they only had one or two at this point in the cycle the last two years. I'm not really sure how that's comforting for them though considering how bad their last two classes have been. They were saying that they get most of their commitments from kids who camp. The obvious reason for this is because the kids who are talented enough to earn offers without camping show no interest in State. I bet they finish outside the Top 50 nationally for the 3rd consecutive year. Eventually, this poor recruiting will catch up to them as some of the more talented kids from previous classes phase out of the program.

  • Maybe. They definitely don't get sexy recruits and a lot of the prospects they do get are considered 'reaches' by recruiting services but TOB, to his credit, has been able to put a winning product on the field for the last 5 seasons.

As long as the 'diamonds in the rough' don't turn out to be 'fools gold' then they should continue to be alright with the way they're recruiting....(like how I mixed my geology analogies there?)

There are several kids in-state that I could see them ending up with who could very well turn out to be good players in the right system. Guys like Pharoah McKever (DE/TE), Anthony Covington (DB), Lucas Wilson (TE), Chris Duffy (ATH) and Jordan Starnes (LB/HBack) etc are all in-state prospects to the level that N.C. State has recruited the past few years (save for David Amerson) and have turned out to be decent players for them.

And again, there is plenty of second, third and in Florida's case fourth tier talent out of state to be productive at a program like N.C. State.

  • He's not gonna go to NCSU. Why? Tom O'Brien is taking that program no where, slow.

  • The most recent N.C. State recruitnik spin is that TOB plays by the rules "too much" and that it hurts them when they recruit against schools who play around in the gray areas.

Their main gripe was times for NCAA contact and the coaching staff not finding ways around getting in touch with kids etc outside of the regular NCAA allotment.

Whatever makes you sleep better at night I guess.
