Maryland, Rutgers to Big Ten?

  • Sounds like they are headed to the Big 10(14). If they take Ron Cherry too, ill through in a big chunk of $$ for their exit fee

GaTech is also in talks, either to come with or instead of Rutgers. There was also a source citing UNC and UVa in there and possibly GaTech getting left out for UNC/UVa. Have no idea how accuate the UNC/Uva rumor is, but GaTech is begging to get in, and Delany (a UNC alum) would love Atlanta market for BTN.

The same things are being said down here in SEC country... The UNC/UVA to the BIG, FSU/Clemson to the Big 12, and Va. Tech/NC State to the SEC rumors are heating up. Makes total sense for the BIG and SEC to make those moves. Not sure the value is there for the Big 12 unless they can take all the southeastern leftovers (Ga. Tech, Miami, Duke, Louisville) and go straight to 16 teams.

  • I doubt UNC is going to the B1G with the B1G orchestrating the downfall of the ACC with a fellow Tar Heel acting as the puppeteer.

I could be wrong, but I doubt it. The passion for the ACC and academics flows out of the same circles in the context of athletic conferences.

  • I'm so sick of all of this talk. Makes me want to give up on college sports. How can UNC/NCSU, UNC/Duke, UNC/UVA etc not be in the same conference?? The people getting screwed here are the fans, and for myself I'm close to giving up on the whole shebang. The NCAA is as crooked as a stick. Let's just create minor leagues, let universities field teams from the student bodies a la high school and drop this whole charade. It's gotten ridiculous. More than anything I blame ESPN. Rant over.

Maryland will join B1G for 2014-15 academic year, expect Rutgers to join same year http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/8651934/maryland-terrapins-accept-invitation-join-big-ten-sources-say …

  • If Swofford wasn't a poor contract negotiator, we wouldn't have been in this predicament. He's the reason why all of this crap is happening.

Crazy thing is, all of the these programs that are splitting will now get better because of the B1G, Big XII or SEC logo on their jersey.

This conference is dead in the water.....

  • Don't think it's fair to say the conference is dead in the water because Maryland left... FSU, UNC, VT, Clemson maybe. I'll trade UM for ND all day. We do need to add someone significant (PSU), and if we can I think we're just fine.

  • Make no mistake that Clemson and Florida State are watching this very closely...

  • If Clemson and fsu bolt for the big12 I would love to see us and dook jump to the SEC. If we're forced to leave the acc I would much rather join the SEC than the Big10.

From what I understand, UNC's higher ups wouldn't even entertain the SEC's call last time around when we invited A&M and Missouri. Too bad. Almost every SEC reporter with connections tend to agree that Va. Tech and NC State would get the #15 and #16 invites if the dominoes fall. I'd love to have you guys and UVA, too, and eventually add more in OK and TX to round out a 20 team league (and possibly leave the NCAA at that point). Nobody in the SEC would want to add Duke except maybe Vandy. I'm a UK fan, and we don't even want Duke. Once Coach K retires, do you really see them as anything more than a Wake Forest program-wide? They don't add a new TV market, either.

  • Swofford is a PUNK!

One of things I've noticed about the ACC and expansion is that when we accepted as a PARTIAL member, we rolled out the carpet like the SEC and B1G! Yet, when we accepted Pitt & Syracuse into the conference, you didn't see none of the fanfare. Swofford wasn't seen on campus with the ACC backdrop, you didn't see him side by side with the ADs of both Pitt & Syracuse. Everything, including the acceptance happened over the phone...for the schools, for the fans and for the media.

Swofford treats this conference like a second rate conference and has no respect for it's member institutions outside of his beloved Carolina.

You can't lead, if your attitude in expansion is to go after teams NOBODY WANTS (Boston College & Syracuse)!

This conference's biggest regret is choosing John as it's commissioner. WHERE THE HELL IS OUR ACC NETWORK...WHY ISN'T IT ON CABLE?!?!?!?!

But your not trading UM for ND, you're letting ND walk all over you while alienating founding institutions. And under no circumstance would Penn State ever leave the Big Ten for significantly less money and stability.

Swofford has saved this nostalgic, basketball centric conference from Big East irrelevance.

We have a contractual seat at the table with the Orange Bowl. I would say he has done a better than average job of saving a conference that didn't even know it was under siege until it was too late.

Has he been perfect? Absolutely not. However, he doesn't deserve the all out bashing.

  • Lots if talk about UNC and uva moving to big ten by summer if not sooner. From very high up source at osu close to discussions with delany. Also ga tech begging big ten. Apparently both schools on board.
    Any word down there?

No talk of that down here. I have a buddy in ATL that is a Ga Tech guy. He doesn't think the Ga Tech talk has any substance.

If UNC ends up in the B1G with Delany pulling the strings on the end of the ACC, I will give up on college athletics and find a pro sports team to follow.

I have ZERO interest in B1G. It is too far away and to places I have no interested in visiting.

I hate your slow boring style of football (except for OSU under Urban (who I hate)) and basketball. The lack of quality baseball, lacrosse or soccer.

It will make me even saltier if the move happens because Delany (a UNC grad) will have caused it to get UNC into the B1G. FUCK HIM!

  • The talk now is the big ten going to 20 teams as they are expecting other acc teams to jump once Maryland get around the $50m. Two ten team divisions. After Nd. Gets around it, its open season

  • If the ACC dies I hope we go SEC. In order for rivalries to really work you have to have teams that you can hate. I do not care enough about any of the teams in the B1G to ever hate them. Now there are few in the SEC that I could grow to hate quickly.

  • Several acc teams would be coming with:

Gatech, UNC, uva, duke, nd, FSU

Nc st and va tech.to sec

Nc state is talking to sec now

This is the latest, basicly two bcs conferences in one with two auto bids

True, either way I'd rather be in the SEC than the Big 10. Nothing against them at all but we fit better in the SEC I believe

    Bengoochi

  • Why would you rather be in other conference other than your own? You do realize this mess is all Swofford's fault, right?

We are a cable network and a brand spanking new TV deal away from making $25-$30 million dollars. Sounds like a lot a money for little, old ACC? Well if it does, that's because you've been conditioned to think that you can't do better than you already have.

$25-$30 million is what the SEC & B1G are about to see in just a few short months.

  • If we end up in the B1G, we will suffer on the recruiting front. Kids are not going to want to play on the road in the Midwest in late fall, early winter when they can play in the southeast at places that are more familiar to them and carry more cache. Kids in our recruiting footprint (NC, SC, GA, VA, FL) aren't going to be excited about a game in the Shoe or the Big House once every 4-6 years.

Maryland is on the hook for the $50M. ACC is not cash poor. Maryland was the only athletic department that was in dire straits financially. The remaining ACC athletic departments are healthy (to my knowledge). No reason for the ACC to rush to settle this when Maryland refuses to pay. Withhold this years and next years payout (approximately $34M) and tell them we will see you in court. The wheels of justice turn slow in the court system.

Other teams and conferences are waiting to see what happens. Make it waiting game and make them wait for prolonged litigation with a massive number pre-trial hearings and expert witness dispositions. Distribute Maryland's ACC share, if you can avoid putting it in trust by having the parties stipulate that at a minimum the exit fee is $20-25M, to keep the remaining ACC schools happy while they wait. That will slow down some teams considering other conferences, especially the Big 12 where you sacrifice 12 years of media rights upon departure.

At least, that is the way I would play it.
