Although Mike Stevens likes everything he has heard and seen from Kentucky, the Davidson (N.C.) Davidson Day receiver/cornerback plans to take things slowly with regards to his recruitment.
Mike Stevens plays WR and CB for Davidson Day (N.C.).
That's at least partly because he hopes North Carolina makes a move.
The 6-feet, 182-pound Stevens currently has offers from three programs [including Kentucky], but admittedly the Tar Heels are his dream program.
"I want that one real bad," he said. "I've always been a UNC fan."
Stevens visited the Tar Heels recently to watch the team scrimmage.
"I saw a lot about how they run things," Stevens said.
According to Stevens, he didn't talk to any of the coaches while in Chapel Hill, but later spoke with assistant Gunter Brewer and head coach Larry Fedora. He also talked with Brewer on Thursday, he said.
"He told me that he wants to get me on a visit again real soon," Stevens said. "They haven't told me specifically which position I would play. Maybe receiver. Everybody else is cornerback. Coach Fedora said he liked me both ways."
Stevens, the No. 191 receiver in the 247Composite, visited Kentucky last weekend for the program's spring game, and the Wildcats made a strong impression.
"It was great," Stevens said. "I had a good time. I really liked it. I liked how involved the fans are -- and how much belief they had in Coach [Mark] Stoops and the coaches to turn the program around. It was real impressive."
Kentucky cornerbacks coach Derrick Ansley is Stevens' recruiter.
"We talked about the secondary, and the things he is trying to do with the players," Stevens said. "He talked about how they need playmakers. He tells me he wants me, and how much I can add to the secondary."
Of the Wildcats, Stevens said, "Of the schools that have offered, they're No. 1. I like the coaching staff. I like the atmosphere."
