With a recent visit to UNC and his first offer in from N.C. State, arguably the top tight end in North is starting to really enjoy the recruiting process.
“The first offer is just the most exciting and the most weight is lifted off your shoulders,” Lucas Wilson said. “I was talking to the N.C. State coach on the phone and I was just extremely happy. It was exciting.”
The 6-5, 215-pounder picked up his first offer from Coach Reed this past week which came just a few days after visiting Chapel Hill for the UNC-Duke game.
“It was really exciting,” the Winston-Salem (N.C.) Mount Tabor product said. “I had always wanted to go to the Dean Dome and watch a UNC basketball game. Getting to see one against Duke was especially exciting.
“I liked the atmosphere a lot. Just getting to see all the fans and everything was really exciting.”
Wilson had been a primary target of Butch Davis’ staff after a standout summer camp.
“My coach started hearing from the new UNC staff and coach (Walt) Bell towards the end of January. Coach (David) Duggan came by my school around the same time.
“Coach Bell is a really young guy and I had heard some good things about him from Eric Ebron when I got a chance to talk to him. I got to talk to the coaches at the game and they seemed pretty cool.”
Wilson explained that the new staff hasn’t talked about a North Carolina offer yet.
The 247Sports 3-star tight end plans to visit Wake Forest’s junior day on the 25th and Clemson’s in the beginning of March.
“My head coach said that I should be picking up some more offers and it looks promising but I just have to wait and see how it goes. I have a lot of visiting to do before I make a decision. I’ll see how the spring and summer goes before I’ll probably decide anything.
“Their offer definitely got me more interested in N.C. State but I wouldn’t say that I have a favorite.”
Wilson reports 22 catches for 400 yards and 2 touchdowns during his junior season.
